Immediate Dentures

Course Description

Lecture and laboratory course that covers the basic principles of immediate denture fabrication, as well as diagnosis and treatment of a partially edentulous patient.

Educational Objectives

The student will gain knowledge in the basic principles of immediate dentures. The objectives are for the student to be able to (1) describe and perform the clinical and laboratory steps required to fabricate immediate dentures, (2) identify normal and abnormal edentulous anatomy and its relationship to immediate denture fabrication, (3) manipulate the dental materials necessary to fabricate an immediate denture and (4) describe the typical problems that can occur during immediate denture construction and, after immediate dentures are placed, be able to solve the same. (5) Oral surgery concepts for immediate denture procedures

Course Outline

Lecture topics include: partial edentulous anatomy, the construction of impression trays and occlusion rims, positioning artificial teeth and waxing denture contours, preparing the mouth for immediate dentures, preliminary impressions, tissue conditioning, pouring and trimming casts, final maxillary and mandibular impressions, boxing the final impression, pouring and trimming master cast, tooth selection, maxillo-mandibular relations, facebows, articulators, factors of articulation, denture occlusion, clinical try-in of dentures, denture esthetics, processing, and polishing of dentures, resilient denture bases, insertion of dentures, post surgical and healing reline, occlusal adjustment and problem solving.

Course Expectations

To successfully complete this course, the student is expected to attend lectures, laboratory sessions and demonstrate understanding of the lecture topics and reading assignments through written quizzes and a final examination.

Ethical and professional behavior are expected of students at all times.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an “Incomplete” grade being assigned.
