Course Description

Using an interactive series of lessons, Dr. Oda will engage you in decision making, identifying whether or not certain oral lesions should be biopsied, watched, or referred. It will cover a total of seven topics: tobacco induced oral cancer, human papilloma virus induced oral cancer, chronic immune diseases, viral infectious diseases, single soft tissue swellings, oral pigmented lesions and bone necrosis. The emphasis will be on each lesion’s clinical presentation, early detection, ideal management and ways to prevent recurrence.

This course will provide up-to-date information on chemicals and drugs causing oral diseases. You will leave this program with ample knowledge, renewed interest, and enthusiasm for the field of oral pathology. This energetic course will provide necessary information directly applicable to improving the everyday practice of diagnosing oral diseases.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course, you will:

  • Identify the difference in clinical presentation of tobacco and HPV induced oral cancer.
  • Discuss the most common and important oral epithelial and soft tissue lesions.
  • Explore the latest technology regarding oral cancer detection.
  • Determine what to biopsy and when.
  • Formulate an applied differential diagnosis specific to each disease.
  • Recognize chemicals and drugs that cause oral diseases including bone necrosis.

Instructors

Dr. OdaDOLPHINE ODA is a Professor of Oral Pathology in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Oda is on the medical staff at University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Although Dr. Oda’s main commitment is to patient care through the biopsy service in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, teaching is her passion. She has taught students of all ages—from elementary school kids to pathology residents—with enthusiasm and zeal. To date, she has been honored with 28 teaching awards, the latest being a highly prestigious University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dr. Oda’s research is in the field of molecular changes in oral carcinogenesis. She has 70 papers published in refereed journals and publishes a popular monthly column called “Case of the Month”. Dr. Oda is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and she holds Washington oral pathology and dental licenses. She is also a member of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the International Association of Oral Pathologists, and the United States Canadian Academy of Pathology.
