Our alumni tell what the school means to them.
The UW Dental Alumni Association is launching a Class Challenge campaign to help the School of Dentistry deal with unprecedented budget cuts. Since 2009, state funding for the UW has fallen by 50 percent, resulting in a loss of faculty positions, staffing and essential revenues. These cutbacks have had a significant impact on the School's educational program.
In this Challenge, Class Representatives are asking their classmates to consider a two-year pledge of $1,000 or more per year to the Fund for Sustaining Excellence. All gifts to this fund will be distributed to academic departments to help meet critical operational needs through the next biennium.
Why a two-year pledge? The School is working hard to replace state dollars with a sustainable business model, by significantly reducing overhead, increasing clinic revenues and tuition, and introducing new profit centers. But it will take time to realize the benefit of those savings and new resources. In the meantime, the School’s academic departments in particular need bridge funding through the next biennium to adequately maintain educational programs.
Many alumni already generously support the school on a regular basis. However, because of the magnitude of the budget situation, this Challenge is a request for an additional two-year gift.
To make a pledge, mail this pledge form to:
University of Washington School of Dentistry
Box 357137, Seattle, WA 98195-7137
Or, if you prefer, fax it to 206.616.6269.
We accept MasterCard, Visa and American Express, or you can make a check payable to UW Foundation. In the memo line, please write Dentistry: Fund for Sustaining Excellence.
If you have any questions, please contact Randy Newquist, Director of Dental Alumni Services, at 206.616.0716 or e-mail randyn@u.washington.edu.
As always, our UW Dental Alumni Association had a presence at this year's Pacific Northwest Dental Conference June 16-17 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle. Below: Dr. Bryan Edgar ('76), a UW Distinguished Benefactor, and Dr. Sue Hollinsworth ('78, right), Immediate Past President of our Dean's Club, stop by the Alumni Association booth to say hi to Christina Harrison, our School's Assistant Dean for Advancement and External Affairs.
Members of the Class of 1961 returned to the School of Dentistry on June 4 to see the Class of 2011 receive its doctoral hoods at commencement. Below are (from left) Dr. Ralph Bowzer, Gerry and Dr. Don Lederman and Dr. James Stoddard.
