Fourth-year student Alice Nunes’ paper on ethics was published by the Journal of the American College of Dentists in its final issue of 2011 (Vol. 78, No. 4, pages 19-21). Her paper was one of five selected by the journal for a special section on student perspectives on ethics in dentistry.
In her paper titled “Personal ethical dilemma: Is the patient competent?” Nunes grappled with the troubling issues surrounding an elderly patient who did not seem capable of adequately managing his own oral or general health care.
The quarterly journal, published since 1934, examines issues affecting the dental profession and society, and also presents features on subjects such as leadership, ethics, governmental and private agencies, policy development, the American College of Dentists, and professional history. Its first editor was Dr. William John Gies.
